ENVIRONMENTAL VEHICLE WASH SOLUTIONS

Managing environmental impacts of operations

By Patrick Whitton, Project Manager, Fleetwash Industrial Systems P/L

Environmental awareness across the METS Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sector is at the forefront of new and exciting infrastructure projects around the globe. The Fleetwash business model has been evolving to manage the impacts that are affecting industry today and our research and development team is predicting what industry will face in the future.

Bringing innovation to “truck washing” is risky business however we are proud to be responsible for delivering world class environmental vehicle and equipment washing systems for over 30 years. This experience provides each client with confidence in environmental compliance.

Environmental impacts, if not managed can pose threats to the natural ecology and the commercial viability of an operation. Often it is necessity not prevention that forces operations to overcome the harsh realities of not implementing effective wash system solutions.

A recent installation has been 3 years in the delivery. The customer is one of Australia’s largest cement producers; they were under a threat from an EPA stop work order due to contaminants leaving the facility in track out. Fleetwash were brought on board to design a wash system capable of handling 600 trucks per day and ensuring compliance with the nil contaminant drag out requirements from the facility. The system was EPA approved, water board approved, council approved and is due to be commissioned this week, without a day lost in production.

In another example of Fleetwash commitment to the environment one of Australia’s largest coal export terminals, located in NSW is under current expansion and this expansion was found to be threatening the native Bell Frog. Fleetwash consulted and delivered two fully automated wash systems to deliver de-contamination washing of all construction vehicles entering the facility. This effort to protect the Bell Frog delivered a chemical mix which neutralised the fungus threat to the Bell Frog, gaining approval from EPA allowed the expansion to continue.

Past clients of Fleetwash include BHP Billiton, Thiess Services, Leighton Contractors, Adelaide Brighton Cement, OK Tedi Mining, Kellogg Joint Venture (The Gorgon Project), RIO Tinto and X-Strata. Recently, wash systems have been commissioned in Australia at Ravensworth Mine (NSW Hunter Valley), Mt Isa Mine (NT), Broadmeadows Sustaining Operations (QLD), Cadia Valley Operations (Orange NSW), Solomon Mine (WA), Goonyella Riverside Mine (QLD) and Mt Arthur Coal (NSW Hunter Valley). Fleetwash has also exported wash systems in the last 12 months to New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Zambia.
